Ingredients
  

  • cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup warm plant-based milk almond, soy, or oat
  • ¼ cup vegan butter melted
  • teaspoons active dry yeast
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup raisins or currants
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • For the cross:
  • ¼ cup flour
  • Water to make a paste
  • Optional glaze:
  • 2 tablespoons apricot jam
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions
 

  • In a small bowl, mix warm plant milk, yeast, and a little sugar; let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  • Add yeast mixture and melted vegan butter; mix to form a dough.
  • Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth.
  • Add raisins and orange zest while kneading.
  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  • Punch down dough and divide into 12 pieces.
  • Shape into buns and place in a baking dish.
  • Let rise again for 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Mix flour and water to form paste; pipe crosses on buns.
  • Bake for 18–22 minutes until golden.
  • Brush with warm apricot glaze if desired.

Notes

  • Ensure milk is warm, not hot, to activate yeast.
  • Do not skip the second rise for best texture.
  • Avoid adding too much flour while kneading.
  • Best served warm or lightly toasted.
